Two soldiers have been killed in a suicide attack at a military checkpoint in Konduga, Borno State, the police said today. The female suicide bomber, according to a statement by the spokesman of the police in Borno state, Victor Isuku, detonated the explosive strapped on her at a military checkpoint just in front of an Internally Displaced Persons camp. Isuku said that the information received from Police in Konduga has it that on Wednesday, 17/5/17, at about 7:30 pm, a female suicide bomber detonated explosive strapped to her body at Mashimari by military checkpoint behind internally displaced persons camp at Konduga. The police spokesman said the woman was lost in the attack which claimed two soldiers. He said the scene of the crime was visited by team of EOD of the police. Isuku said normalcy has been restored even as the situation continued to be monitored.

Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State has been asked to own up on what he knows about the alleged ongoing plans by some persons to overthrow President Muhammadu Buhari through military upsurge. Wike, had while reacting to a comment by Chief of Army Staff, General Tukur Buratai, that some people were approaching soldiers for political reasons; asked him to stop allocating soldiers to politicians. According to him, “Who are those approving battalions of soldiers to politicians? If they don’t want soldiers to follow politicians, they should stop giving soldiers to politicians.” Reacting to Wike’s comment, ‎Barrister Charles Timothy, ‎the National Coordinator of Coalition for Truth and Justice, a human right group said the statement is heavily pregnant with meaning. I think the whole thing is political, otherwise, both Nigeria and Turkey have, at least, business relationship. I believe Turkey has (tertiary) institutions in Nigeria; if that is the case, it is something that could be resolved between the two governments without necessarily putting innocent ones into unnecessary tension and problem. By my view, whatever must have necessitated it, the two governments should sit at a round table and iron the issues out, so that the innocent students could be released to go back to their schools. If they have found anything unusual in the behaviour of those that are in detention, they should let our government know and if they don’t want them in their country, Turkey, then they should repatriate them. If it is mere politics, I think they need to be released and allowed to go about their academic pursuits. Two wrongs don’t make a right. The Nigeria Labour Congress on Thursday dismissed as misleading, speculations that talks between it and the Federal Government on new national minimum wage had collapsed. President of the NLC, Comrade Ayuba Wabba, said that the talks had not even started. He said that the government is foot dragging on the issue. He said that the tripartite structure that should consider the modalities for the implementation had not been inaugurated.
